"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

APRIL 2026 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

Coding Adventures in Action

Our young learners have been exploring the world of coding by guiding robots across a grid. As they sequence instructions and test their ideas, students are developing key STEM and problem-solving skills in a meaningful context. Through inquiry and collaboration, they are learning to think critically, debug challenges, and reflect on their strategies. These engaging experiences are nurturing confident, creative thinkers and communicators within our Early Years classroom.

Building Strong Readers, One Sound at a Time

Our young learners have been enthusiastically exploring CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, with a special focus on identifying end sounds. Through a variety of engaging, hands-on activities, students are strengthening their listening and phonics skills in meaningful ways. These experiences are helping them make connections between sounds and letters while becoming more confident in their early reading abilities. As they continue to grow as communicators, their enthusiasm for reading is shining through every day.

PRIMARY

Blast off to Discovery

In our PYP “How the World Works” unit, students explored the wonders of space through creative models of space technology. Using their designs as inspiration, they researched important discoveries that have shaped our understanding of the universe. From satellites to rockets; learners connected scientific ideas with real-world innovations. This hands-on approach sparked curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for how exploration drives new knowledge.

Inspiring the Journey Ahead

As we start our PYP Exhibition (PYPX) journey, students are tuning into their interests and identities as learners by selecting inspirational quotes that truly resonate with them. Each quote is thoughtfully placed in their journal, serving as a personal reminder of strength, resilience and motivation. These meaningful words will guide them as they navigate challenges, take action, and reflect on their growth throughout the process. By developing learner agency and a strong sense of purpose, students are setting the foundation for a thoughtful and empowering PYPX experience.

SECONDARY

Measuring PH changes in the Lab

Our Year 7 students have been exploring chemical properties and PH changes through hands-on investigation!

Moving beyond traditional indicators such as litmus and universal indicator paper, students used a wide range of tools and substances—all available in our school laboratory—to deepen their understanding, including:

🔬 Neulog sensors

🥬 Red cabbage juice (a natural indicator!)

🧪 Silver nitrate

🎨 Methyl orange

💙 Methylene blue

🌸 Phenolphthalein

Students observed colour changes, reactions and patterns to identify acids, bases and neutral solutions, while developing their skills in scientific observation, analysis, and interpretation.

Middle Years Programme (MYP) Interdisciplinary Units (IDUs)

One of the things we like best about the IB ⁩MYP are the Interdisciplinary Units, where students take on a task that requires them to blend content and skills from different subjects.   The ⁨Year 8s recently did a dress rehearsal for their Individuals & Societies and English IDU summative assessment about social protests and influential voices.⁩ From English, they had to use their persuasive communication skills to speak convincingly to an audience. From Individuals and Societies, they had to apply their knowledge of what drives protests and what kinds of voices tend to stand out in the crowd.

HIGH SCHOOL

Woodworking, 3D Printing and Chess

The Year 11s have been learning some classic and some modern skills at the same time as designing and building their very own custom chess sets. To make the board, they learned some important woodworking skills and to make the pieces; they created their own designs which will be 3D printed.

Statistics

For their unit on Statistics, Year 11 students applied what they learned about correlation and regression to explore authentic data connected to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. From investigating the link between education access and poverty, to analyzing carbon emissions and renewable energy, students discovered how mathematics helps us make sense of the world's most pressing challenges.

Well-Being at ISB

Spring has arrived, bringing with it sunshine, blooming flowers, and all the freshness of a new season! It’s the perfect time to celebrate growth, positivity, and well-being in our school community. Across Primary, students have been focusing on conflict resolution and learning how to be caring communicators. Through these lessons, they are developing empathy, active listening skills, and strategies for resolving disagreements in constructive and thoughtful ways - skills that build stronger, kinder classrooms.

In Secondary, our well-being programme has been concentrating on practical strategies to manage stress and maintain balance. Students are exploring tools for self-regulation, mindfulness, and healthy routines, particularly as exam season approaches. Our aim is to empower them to make choices that support their mental, emotional, and social well-being, fostering resilience and confidence both in and out of the classroom.

We have also been thrilled to host engaging guest sessions for the wider community. In early March, Johannes Claassen led an assembly and parent meeting on being smart and safe online, offering valuable guidance for students and families alike - thank you to everyone who joined us. Coming soon, Years 9–12 will participate in a session on AI safety with a specialist from MUNI, helping our students navigate emerging technologies responsibly and safely.

As we look forward to the Easter holiday, we wish all our families a joyful and restful break. We remain committed to nurturing lifelong wellbeing learners at ISB, providing opportunities for students to grow, reflect and thrive in mind, body and spirit. Let’s continue to embrace positivity, kindness, and curiosity as the season of growth blooms around us!
