"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

MAY 2025 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

Rhythm Exploration

Our Robins use rhythm sticks to clap out their names and play along to songs. Exploring rhythm in early years helps us develop essential musical and cognitive skills, such as timing, coordination and attentive listening. It also supports language development laying the groundwork for future learning across multiple disciplines.

Butterfly Cycle Experts

Year 1 used their writing skills to share what they discovered about each stage of a butterfly’s life cycle. Each child created their own butterfly journal, capturing their learning in a fun and meaningful way whilst making connections within their collaborative inquiries.

PRIMARY

Knowledgeable Mathematicians

This month we hosted our third bi-annual Mathlete Competition. This student-initiated event brings together students from across divisions who share a passion for mathematics, offering them the opportunity to experience the excitement and satisfaction of applying their arithmetic and critical thinking skills in a fun and competitive way.

PYPx Launch

Year 6 enthusiastically participated in a special launch event for their PYPx. We had guest speakers, tuning-in activities and inquiries into meaningful action. Thanks to MIMSA, Element Bar and Restaurant and Brno Expat centre for taking time to discuss their passions and help inspire and motivate our young learners.

SECONDARY

Vienna Science Fair

Once again, our students did very well at the annual Vienna Science Fair.  Our 2 student representatives each received Superior Rating with one winning her category and the other receiving an invite to France to have a look at their fusion reactor!

Service as Action

Year 7 students showed problem-solving and teamwork skills in Rybka community garden during their Service as Action day. In teams, they got the garden ready for springtime by weeding the path, mending the herb spiral and painting the furniture.  This kind of opportunity is very special in the IB Middle Years Programme as it helps the students become more self-confident and provides them the chance to be contributing global citizens.

HIGH SCHOOL

Model United Nations at Masaryk University

ISB students at Muni MUN: the model UN at Masaryk University, which provides students with the chance to learn about diplomacy and geopolitics. In the words of Slovak Ambassador, Peter Bátor, “it’s important in these times, that people show courage and stand up for what they believe in, even if you are the only person in the room with a particular view”. The neatly mirrors the IB learner profile attributes of risk-taking and being principled.

Writing Books for Early Years Students

Year 10 Art Students recently created 3d or pop-up books for the Early Years students.  After they had all been cut out, coloured and bound, they took them to the Kindergarten to read them to our youngest learners, who always enjoy attention from the high school students.

Well-Being at ISB

MYP and DP:

This past month, the ISB Mind Matters Club focused on Sexual Harassment and Discrimination. They outlined and described what both are and why they are unacceptable. They also provided strategies for handling these issues and how to stop them. The club presented students with various scenarios of each, where they worked in groups to discuss how they could handle each situation using the tools provided by the Mind Matters Club. Next month, the club will be presenting on Exam Stress and Dealing with Exam-Related Grief, which will be timely as students prepare for various end-of-year exams.

PYP:

This spring season has brought with it a sense of renewed energy—and a full calendar! Amidst the busyness of Easter celebrations, school events, and seasonal transitions, we’ve taken meaningful time during Wellbeing sessions to reflect on what it truly means to be a global citizen. This ongoing focus encourages students to think beyond themselves, to consider the world they live in, and to explore the values of empathy, responsibility, and action across cultures and communities.

To mark Earth Day last week, we’ve launched a student-led recycling initiative during Wellbeing time. This project not only helps our school to reduce waste but also empowers students to take ownership of their impact on the environment. Through this hands-on activity, our learners are seeing that global citizenship isn’t just a concept—it’s something they can live and practice each day. We’re proud of their thoughtful contributions and look forward to sharing more, as the project develops!
