"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

MAY 2023 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

5 Senses - Hearing and Tasting

Early Years students have been inquiring into their 5 senses. One sunny afternoon, they went on a nature walk with their extra large listening ears, to listen carefully for specific sounds in nature. The students absolutely loved all the activities in this unit of inquiry, however, their favourite activity was definitely having the opportunity to try new foods. They got to try foods that were sweet, sour, salty and bitter. What are your favourite flavours?

Learning about Responsibilities

Year 1 students had a new member join their class this past month. The new addition was Baby Taylor, who has been cared for and looked after by the students. Through interactions with Baby Taylor and activities involving her, the students have learned what it means to be responsible and caring towards someone else.

PRIMARY

World Book Day

World Book Day is celebrated across the globe on April 23rd. At ISB, Primary students celebrated by dressing up as their favourite book characters. Students brought in their favourite books as well to share with their classmates. It was a ‘story’ filled day, with exciting times within classrooms and hallways, as you met wizards, animals, astronauts, and so many more. Ms. Trunchbull from ‘Matilda’ was even seen walking the hallways looking for trouble makers!

Outdoor Classroom

Learning can happen anywhere, and for students across the Primary division it has been happening in the new outdoor classroom. This new space allows students to be in nature and take in the fresh air, as they learn. Students are enjoying our new outdoor classroom and the change of scenery.

SECONDARY

Vienna Science Fair

Once again, the ISB participants in the Vienna Science Fair distinguished themselves.  Our Year 7 boys received a Superior Rating for their project and our Year 9 student received a Special Award: the Junior Applied Engineering Award. Congratulations!

Lights, Camera, Action - Acting out Political Cartoons

Lights 💡Camera 🎥 Action! 🎬 Year 8 became thespians for a day and wrapped up their unit on the ‘Age of Imperialism’ with political cartoon plays. Using cartoons depicting major themes and events from around the world, they were challenged to incorporate key vocabulary and to start and end their plays in the position of the characters in their cartoons.

HIGH SCHOOL

DNA Extraction

Year 12 Biology students recently spent some time in the lab extracting DNA from fruit.
After all the learning and experimenting, they at least had some leftovers for a smoothie to enjoy while they wrote up their lab reports!

In the Studio

We’re extremely proud of our creative and talented students. Many of them are now writing and recording their own songs and learning how to be audio engineers for each other to help with the recording process. Whether on stage or in the studio, they continue to impress and inspire!
