"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

DECEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

Creating Patterns

Early Years students have been digging deeper as they inquire into different types of patterns. By using a variety of materials such as colourful buttons, beads, paint and tasty fruits, students displayed their knowledge by creating different types of patterns.

Taking the Learning Outdoors

For some fresh air and vitamin D, Early Years students took their learning outside while the weather was just right. Using “Shape Finders”, they went on a scavenger hunt around the playground to find shapes on items that they climb and play with every day.

PRIMARY

Czech Day

Primary students participated in Czech Day activities to learn more about Czech culture, as well as the holiday of Freedom and Democracy day on November 17th. The activities included learning about Václav Havel, tasting jitrnice or jelito, building jednohubky, singing Czech folk songs and testing their overall Czech knowledge.

Learning about the Human Body

Year 5 students have been inquiring into the Human Body and how the different body systems work to help keep us healthy. Through investigative science experiments, building models and taking a digital peek into how the systems interconnect, the students have acquired a great deal of knowledge.

SECONDARY

The Trial of Louis XVI

In Individuals & Societies, students have been looking at the lead-up to the French Revolution. They recently held a trial for Louis the XVI (played by the Secondary Principal) to determine whether he should be sentenced to death for his decisions and treatment of the people.  After an enthusiastic debate, he was found guilty.

Making Models of Cells

Year 9 students have been learning about the similarities and differences of plant and animal cells. Using modeling clay, they constructed 3D models that were carefully labeled. This kind of hand-on activity is a great way to mentally and physically learn about the different parts of cells.

HIGH SCHOOL

Collecting Data

Year 13 biology students used our science lab's NeuLog sensors to investigate how biotic and abiotic factors are affected in a mesocosm. They were able to simultaneously connect up to 20 sensors to gather data efficiently.

Theory of Knowledge Exhibition

What is the role of imagination in the production of knowledge? Is some knowledge more 'useful' than others? IB Diploma students recently put on an exhibition where each Year 13 student explored such questions and presented different answers by discussing 3 objects from the world. Is a laptop more 'useful' than a beautiful painting? What required more imagination to create: the painting or the laptop? These are the kinds of discussions we get to have in the Theory of Knowledge course.
