School rules
The School Rules are based on the Children’s Rights Treaty, adopted by the General Assembly of the UN on November 20th, 1989 and ratified by the Federal Assembly of the ČSFR in January 1991. The following rules were approved by the Pedagogical Council on October 6th, 1997 and highlight some of the rules from Treaty found at http://www.unhchr.ch/.
ARTICLE I. All stipulations of the School Rules are in correspondence with the Children’s Rights Treaty. The specifications of the School Rules are such that the individual child’s interest is the primary concern at all times.
ARTICLE II. Discipline administered at school respects human dignity and democratic principles and is in accordance with the Children’s Rights Treaty.
ARTICLE III. Parents have the primary responsibility for ensuring the education and rearing of their child(ren).
ARTICLE IV. Children must be protected from exposure to drug abuse. To ensure this, the school provides financing for the training of suitable staff members who then relay this information to their colleagues and parents.
ARTICLE V. Activities at the school adhere to the premise that the education and rearing of children must focus on the development of personality and that children have an undeniable right to education, rest, free time, play and age-appropriate activities.
ARTICLE VI. The school respects the rights of all children, not discriminating based on race, colour, gender, language, religion, political views, nationality, ethnicity, background or any special physical or mental conditions.
a) Right of Students
The Student has the right:
- to education (i.e. attendance of classes).
- to rest and free time.
- to access to information, especially that which contributes to his/her mental, moral and social development; the Student also has to right to be protected from information that may be detrimental to this development.
- to express his/her opinion on all matters which concern him/her. This opinion must be expressed in a manner that adheres to the standards of behaviour and citizenship and be acknowledged by teachers, educational consultants, deputy headmaster and headmaster.
- to be protected against abuse (physical and psychological), malevolence and the effects thereof. The Student has the right to access preventative programs which provide support in dealing with the aforementioned issues.
- to seek assistance in the event that he/she faces an overwhelming problem.
- to seek additional instruction in the case that she/he experiences difficulty in grasping the contents of the curriculum.
- to special care in legitimate cases (illness, disability, exceptional abilities or talent).
- to learn and develop in a healthy environment devoid of harmful substances (within the school’s capacities).
- to be protected from all forms of sexual abuse and all contact with narcotics and intoxicants.
b) Responsibilities of the Students
- Students are responsible for maintaining proper hygiene at all times.
- Students are required to demonstrate the required standard of care towards all persons with whom they deal at school at all times.
- Students are are expected to conduct themselves in a cordial manner towards all persons with whom they deal at school.
- Students are required to enter and leave the school through the designated entrance and or must remain in the building unless they have been granted permission to leave by an agent of the school.
- Students must not be disruptive or exhibit otherwise inappropriate behaviour during the lessons.
- For lessons taking place outside the homeroom, Students wait for the teacher in a previously designated area.
- Students must enter offices only when invited.
- Students must ensure that they are wearing appropriate footwear at all times during the school day (ex. clean shoes in the building, appropriate shoes for physical education, etc.)
- Students are to take all personal belongings with them at the end of the day. With the exception of in-door shoes (which may remain on designated shelves in the cloakroom), all personal articles are to be left in the classroom or taken with them.
- Students must not bring to school any object or substance which may be harmful to themselves or other persons.
- Students must not bring to school media easily identifiable as being inappropriate in a school environment.
- Students must not bring large amounts of money or unnecessary valuables to school. The school is not responsible for stolen or lost items such as a cellular phone though these incidents must be reported to a teacher immediately.
- Students are forbidden from possessing, using or distributing illegal substances at school (this includes alcohol and tobacco).

Students must remain quiet and orderly in the cafeteria, respecting the instructions of the monitoring teacher. The expected code of conduct in the cafeteria is as follows:
- Students must proceed to the cafeteria under the supervision of a staff member.
- Students must have their lunch cards with them every day.
- Students must use the furniture, tableware and flatware in an appropriate manner and must report any damage to a staff member immediately.
- In the event of repeated inappropriate behaviour, students can be barred from using the lunch services at the school.
c) Attendance
- Students must attend all regularly scheduled lessons, arriving in time and prepared. All absences must be excused by parents before the students returns to school. Absences may be excused by phone, e-mail or in writing. If parents are aware that their child will be absent beforehand, the school must be notified prior to the days on which the student will be absent. This must occur within the first 48 hours of the extended absence.
- In some cases of extended absences, the school has the right to request medical documentation.
- Whenever possible, medical appointments should occur after school.
- If the student is absent from class yet is participating in an activity organized by the school, they are not counted as absent.
d) School Property
- Students must respect all school property, using them according to the instructions of school staff members.
- Students are responsible for all materials and books loaned to them for the duration of the school year. In the event of loss or damage, the students are expected to replace the damaged materials or compensate the school for the full cost of replacement.
e) Hygiene and Safety
- All persons present at the school must conduct themselves in a manner that does not endanger others.
- Students' attire must be clean and to an appropriate standard of hygiene.
- Students must report each accident resulting in injury to an appropriate staff member immediately in order for the incident to be dealt with appropriately in terms of first aid treatment and documentation.
- Accidents resulting in injury that occur on a field trip organized by the school must also be reported and documented immediately. In such an event, the school must also me notified of the incident.
- Students are not to handle the electrical equipment at the school unless explicitly directed to do so by an appropriate staff member.
- Whenever outside the school and while participating in an event organized by the school, students must respect the rules of the road and not behave in any manner that could result in injury to themselves or any other traffic participant.
- While on overnight field trips, students obey the rules set by the lodging establishment as well as obey all instructions of the employees.
- Students must adhere to the instructions given to them by the teachers of physical education and those subject in science which necessitate the use of a science laboratory. These instructions are given to each student at the beginning of each school year.
- Students are only to be in the school when the premises are supervised by staff members. These times are announced at the beginning of the year and clearly displayed throughout the school for the duration of the school year.
- Guests to the school must be in the company of a student or staff member and must sign the register located at the entrance.
- Persons who wish to enter the school must use the intercom system and state their name(s) and reasons for entering the school to the staff member who answers.
- Persons who wish to enter the school to meet with a teacher will be asked to wait until that teacher is no longer on duty either in the classroom or who is supervising an area of the school.
- It is forbidden for staff members to smoke or drink alcohol on the premises of the school.
- The headmaster has the right or order a blood alcohol level and/or sobriety test for staff members. There must be at least one witness to this test.
f) Daily Routine
- The school is open to international students attending the before and after-school clubs from 7:30am until 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.
- Regular lessons begin at 8:30am and go to 2:30pm with a break between 12:00pm and 12:55pm.
- There is a 30 minute break between 10:00am and 13:00am.
- After-school activities organized by staff members run between 2:30pm and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
- Upon entering the school, students must first change their shoes and remove their jackets in the cloakroom, taking only their school supplies with them to the classroom. Cloakrooms are to be locked after the last students has entered the school for the day and is not to be opened except at designated times.
- As soon as lessons are finished for the day, students are allowed to leave the premises.
g) Parents of Students
- Parents who wish to enter the school to hold an official consultation with the headmaster, a teacher or any other staff member must do so at the designated time or by appointment.
- Parents who wish to register a complaint with the school must for the complaint procedure outlined in document (not yet drafted).
