"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

JANUARY 2024 NEWSLETTER

Dear ISB Students, Teachers, Families, Friends, Partners,

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to 2024 at ISB. It seems that challenging times around the planet are becoming a new norm. In the light of the tragedies and ongoing struggles across the globe and even close to home, we continue to believe that the only real  long term solution is to provide young people with a high quality education that includes a strong focus on wellbeing. We will continue to be guided by how important it is to support our students in leading a safe, healthy & balanced life so that they are set up for a successful future.

Stay strong, optimistic and creative. Welcome to 2024! :)

Jan Švihálek, Head of School

EARLY YEARS

Inquiring into Baking

There's a lot going on with baking: ingredients have to be measured, chemical reactions have to occur, step by step instructions have to be followed, and most importantly, students get to enjoy the outcome of their efforts by sharing their experience with friends.

Knowledge of Numbers

Through a variety of  engaging activities, our Early Years students learn about numbers: how to order them, identify the written form and even how to correct their own mistakes. Learning is always through play to help them discover, inquire and make connections with the real world.

PRIMARY

Caring for the Homeless

Our year 11 students were true role models in supporting our primary students in taking action to support a local homeless centre. Together they made around 100 sandwiches which were later given to the homeless. Participating in opportunities to reach out to our community helps the students become global and local citizens.

Engaging Design and Technology Activities

3D printing requires creative problem-solving skills and it engages students across a variety of learning styles. Creative design tasks help students see the real-life application of technology, which fosters a sense of curiosity and helps boost overall computer literacy.

SECONDARY

Hercules Myths

Year 8 English students have been delving into classical studies.  Specifically, they have been reading the myths of Hercules to find out just how important they are to Western literature. To help them become knowledgeable, they worked together to unscramble and solve puzzles about the hero’s famous 12 Labours.

Catagio

Secondary Spanish students became even more open-minded about different Christmas traditions around the world.  They were visited by Caga Tió, who brings presents to children on Christmas eve, according to Catalan tradition.

HIGH SCHOOL

Guest Speakers from Masaryk University

High school and Secondary students had the privilege of learning about End of Life Care and Sustainability from Masaryk University students. After learning about patients who are receiving end of life care, the students made Christmas and New Years cards for the hospice patients.  An excellent way to be caring during the holiday season.

Trip to Prague

IB Diploma students taking Czech literature recently spent the night in Prague to attend Maryša at the National Theatre.  When reflecting after the play, they communicated that the experience allowed them to better appreciate the nuances of the story.  Of course, when in Prague, it’s important to see the sights so they also stopped by the Kafka museum and the John Lennon Wall.
