"LEARN, GROW, AND BE UNIQUE WITH ISB"

OCTOBER 2023 NEWSLETTER

EARLY YEARS

Sports in Early Years

Joyful moments in the gym while our students practise their locomotor skills which are essential for children’s physical development. One of our Learner Profiles is being balanced, which is an integral part of our curriculum, promoting both academics and well-being opportunities for our students, starting in Early Years.

Center - Based Learning Approach

Learning centres in the classroom promote a sense of independence, while also creating an inclusive environment in which all students can reach their true potential. Here students are busy recognizing their numbers through a range of interactive and engaging activities.

PRIMARY

Signs and Symbols

Year 2 students are learning about signs and symbols around the world and how they are used to communicate different messages. After an exciting lesson on how international maritime signal flags are used to communicate with ships, students used nautical flags to write their own names.

Educational Field Trip

Year 5 students have been inquiring into the ways in which people can create or manipulate messages to target specific audiences. As a meaningful learning activity, students went to the Technical Museum and learned about optical illusions and the history of computers and mobile phones.

SECONDARY

Literature Analysis

There are quite a few skills that are developed when discussing and analysing literature.  We learned to empathise with the characters.  We learn to relate effects back to their causes.  We learn new ways of using language to describe the range of human experience.  Years 8 and 9 have been reading short stories and discussing key plot points and presented their thoughts through posters they made in small groups.

Exploring DNA through Origami

Who are we?  While there are many ways we can approach this question, Year 8 students have been approaching this question in Science, learning about genetics and DNA.  To help their investigation of the structure of genetic code they made some models using origami. Those who had a special talent for it (partially) had their DNA to thank!

HIGH SCHOOL

Exploring Language Families

Have you ever thought about the relationship between languages?  Languages have evolved over time in their own way and while the details are also useful for the analysis of language and literature, they are also just really fun to know.  Year 11 students have been exploring these details in their Czech classes, sorting languages into groups or big language families.

Well-Being lessons in Homeroom

This year we have started having mini wellbeing lessons during our morning homeroom sessions.  It gives us the chance to start the day by talking about different aspects of life and how to lead a good one.  Recently, our Year 13s have been looking at the important details to consider when making a lifestyle choice.  It’s not always clear when to prioritise work over fun, or yourself over others, but talking about these things always helps.
